As entrepreneurs, marketing has long been this overly difficult task of trying to get your message out to the right people so you can sell more product. Everyone wants to do this and some have been lucky enough in today’s digital age to find that one channel that is responsible for an outsized percentage of their sales. Just think about it for a second. At this point in time, you have undoubtedly heard about the friend’s cousins sister twice removed who started a business and now sells exclusively through [insert social media platform here] and generates $X millions of dollars doing it.
The truth is that yes, some people have been fortunate enough to make this happen but in reality, there are 1 of these for every several thousand who are trying. In other words, don’t be envious of someone else’s lightning in a bottle. You can fight back in the sea of noise by sending a potential customer a message at exactly the right time to generate a sale. You do this through email.
We advocate highly for email for several reasons but let’s first address the elephant in the room
Aren’t people overwhelmed with junk email already??
The answer is yes, they are overwhelmed with JUNK email. Unfortunately, traditional practices of email marketing have turned a lot of people off. The old school mentality was to build up your email list real big by collection methods or flat out buying lists of people who have no idea who you are. Then pounding those lists into oblivion until people unsubscribed, marked it as spam, or even worse ESP’s blocked the sender.
Another frowned upon practice that we will reference in this series is the dreaded “Re-send to People who haven’t opened”. This is a great feature to have but an incredibly abused feature. Resending someone the same email 4 or 5 times in a short time span is a sure way to have that person completely tune you out and ultimately your brand. The moral of the story with this one, practice restraint and use sparingly.
This has created a huge email marketing opportunity
Ponder this for a second. Think about your own email habits. I bet if I went through your email inbox I could find some subscription emails that you flat out delete with no intention to read…. but I also bet I can find a few that you keep around and genuinely interested in their product. You keep them because that brand and their messaging in their emails speaks to you, makes you want to buy more of something, etc. etc.

We believe in email for lots of reasons but primarily, we believe in it because YOU own it. Yes, you can build up your Instagram, Facebook, or any other following up to be the biggest in your industry. But if one day these companies decide to pull your account for any reason, you’re done. All of those followers are gone. No one to consume your content. This will completely crater businesses that rely on them. Add in the fact that organic reach has been drastically reduced. You now have to pay more money just to reach the people who have liked your page….. that sh*& is BANANAS.
